Tabled until a future meeting

Allied Electric Signs wants to place two pylon signs for the Sky View Shopping Center located at approximately Center Street and Timpanogos Highway. The applicant asks the Planning Commission to approve an exception to allow them larger and taller signs then normally allowed.

The proposed copy size is 360 square feet on one sign and 323 square feet on the other; the maximum allowed size is 200 square feet. However, the Code allows Planning Commission to allow additional sign area. The Code also limits height to 25 feet, and the applicant requests 53 feet for both pylon signs. The Code specifies times when the height can increase to 70 feet; however, this location does not meet any of the listed requirements. The Code includes language that any multi-parcel or multi-tenant project can have exceptions approved by the Planning Commission as a conditional use.

They argue that the additional size and height should be allowed because of the high speeds along Timpanogos Highway and the elevated overpass at Center Street that reduces visibility in the area.

I think the 53' height of the pylons is justified and makes sense. When driving east on the commuter lane I'd want to see what businesses are available at that Center street exit off the commuter lane.

We have very well thought out code for a reason, please stick to it. Their justifications aren't valid arguments. They want bigger signs, more parking, and less trees. Center Cal has done better. Expect better here in our city as well.
